VA Aid & Attendance Benefit Rates (2025)

The VA Aid & Attendance pension is a needs-based benefit. Maximum monthly amounts as of 2025:

$1,478 /month

Surviving Spouse

Widow or widower of a qualifying wartime veteran who did not remarry

$1,830 /month

Single Veteran

Unmarried wartime veteran meeting service, care need, and financial criteria

$2,229 /month

Married Veteran

$2,902 /month

Two Veterans (Married)

Married couple where both spouses qualify independently as wartime veterans

† 2025 VA pension rates. Subject to annual cost-of-living adjustment. Benefit amount is reduced by countable income; most home care expenses offset income dollar-for-dollar.

Eligibility Requirements

All three criteria must be met to qualify for VA Aid & Attendance:

① Military Service

At least 90 days of active duty with an honorable discharge, including at least one day during a recognized wartime period. Does not require a service-connected disability.

② Care Need

A physician must certify that the veteran or surviving spouse requires help with activities of daily living — bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, or transferring — due to age, illness, or disability.

③ Financial Criteria

Net worth generally must be under $155,356 (2025 threshold, adjusted annually). Most unreimbursed medical and home care expenses reduce countable income, which can shift borderline cases into eligibility.

Qualifying Wartime Periods

At least one day of active service must fall within a recognized wartime period:

War Period Dates
World War II December 7, 1941 — December 31, 1946
Korean War Era June 27, 1950 — January 31, 1955
Vietnam War Era August 5, 1964 — May 7, 1975 (February 28, 1961 for veterans who served “in country” in Vietnam before August 5, 1964)
Gulf War Era August 2, 1990 — present (ongoing)

Most A-Team VetAssist clients are Vietnam-era veterans and their surviving spouses. Korean War-era families often call to find that a parent still living at home qualifies.

How the VetAssist Program Works

Step 1

Free Eligibility Review

A-Team reviews service records (DD-214), care needs, and finances to determine if the veteran qualifies. No cost, no commitment.

Step 2

VA Application Assistance

VetAssist navigates the VA paperwork — Form 21-2680 physician examination, financial disclosure, service documentation — and submits the complete claim on your behalf.

Step 3

Care Starts Immediately

VetAssist can advance funds so care begins right away — while the VA application is still pending. Families do not wait 3–6 months for approval before getting help.

Step 4

VA Pays; You Keep the Care

Once the VA approves the pension, monthly benefit payments reimburse the advanced care costs and fund ongoing home care through A-Team.

Home Care Services Covered Under VetAssist

VA Aid & Attendance funds can pay for any non-medical in-home care service A-Team provides:

Personal Care (ADLs)

Bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, safe transfers, and mobility assistance

Companion Care (IADLs)

Meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry, grocery shopping, and appointment escort

Medication Reminders

Reminding the veteran to take pre-poured medications on schedule throughout the day

Overnight & Respite Care

Overnight shifts and relief coverage so family caregivers can rest, work, or travel

Dementia & Memory Care

Structured daily routines, redirection, and safety monitoring for veterans with Alzheimer’s or dementia

Fall Prevention

Caregiver presence during high-risk activities, home safety assessment, and transfer training

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the veteran need a service-connected disability to use VetAssist?
No. VA Aid and Attendance is a needs-based pension benefit — not a disability compensation program. A service-connected disability rating is not required. The veteran must have wartime service, a care need certified by a physician, and meet the financial criteria. Many veterans who were denied service-connected disability in the past still qualify for this separate pension benefit.
Can a surviving spouse receive VA Aid and Attendance in Pennsylvania?
Yes. The surviving spouse of a qualifying wartime veteran — someone who did not remarry after the veteran’s death — may receive up to $1,478/month (2025 rates). The widow or widower must have their own care need and meet the financial threshold. Many Philadelphia and Bucks County families do not realize this benefit extends to spouses.
How long does VA Aid and Attendance approval take?
VA Aid and Attendance claims typically take 3 to 6 months to process. VetAssist can advance funds so that care begins immediately while the VA application is still pending. Families do not have to wait months before receiving help — the caregiver can start within days of the initial eligibility review.
Is VetAssist the same as VA home health care?
No. VetAssist uses the VA Aid and Attendance pension benefit — a monthly cash benefit that a veteran can use to pay any enrolled provider for non-medical home care. VA Community Care home health is a separate program that provides skilled nursing and therapy through the VA medical system. Many veterans use VetAssist for daily personal and companion care while receiving VA medical services separately.
What if the veteran has already been denied Aid and Attendance?
Denials can often be appealed. Common reasons for denial include incomplete documentation, income that exceeded the threshold (home care expenses can reduce countable income), or missing physician documentation. Call A-Team at (215) 490-9994 and we will review the denial letter and determine whether an appeal or a new claim is the right path forward.
