VA Aid & Attendance Eligibility Guide
for Pennsylvania Families
A plain-English walkthrough of who qualifies, what documents you need, and how A-Team handles the entire VetAssist application on your behalf.
The 3-Part Eligibility Test
Every family that contacts A-Team about VetAssist goes through these three questions. If you can answer yes to all three, there is a strong probability your family qualifies.
① Military Service
The veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a recognized wartime period (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War — see dates below), and received an honorable or general discharge. No service-connected disability is required.
② Care Need
A physician must certify that the veteran or surviving spouse requires help with daily activities — bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, or transferring — due to age, illness, or disability. Most seniors applying for home care easily meet this standard.
③ Financial Criteria
Net worth generally must be under $155,356 (2025). Importantly, unreimbursed medical and home care expenses reduce countable income — which means many families who think they don’t qualify actually do once home care costs are factored in.
Documents You Will Need
Service Records
- DD-214 (Certificate of Release/Discharge) — most important document
- If DD-214 is lost: A-Team can request a replacement from the National Archives (takes 2–4 weeks)
- Discharge papers from service branch if available
Medical & Financial
- Physician’s statement of care needs (Form 21-2680)
- Social Security award letter
- Bank statements (last 3 months)
- Asset documentation (property, investments)
- Marriage certificate (for surviving spouse claims)
- Death certificate of veteran (for surviving spouse claims)
How VetAssist Handles the Application
The VA Aid & Attendance application is complex — the average family takes 6–9 months to navigate it alone, and many errors result in denials. VetAssist, through A-Team, manages the entire process:
Prepares and submits VA Form 21P-534EZ (Application for DIC, Death Pension, and/or Accrued Benefits) or 21P-527EZ (living veteran claim)
Coordinates the physician examination (Form 21-2680) with your doctor
Advances care funds so your family member receives home care immediately — you do not wait 3–6 months for VA approval before getting help
Tracks the claim status and responds to any VA requests for additional evidence
Once approved, VA benefit payments are used to reimburse advanced care costs and fund ongoing home care at no out-of-pocket cost to the family
